Iowa Seal of Biliteracy

East Mills Community School District is pleased to announce the two students from the Class of 2023 who have earned Biliteracy Seals from the State of Iowa.  Those receiving the award under the guidance of EMCSD Spanish instructor Lindsay Stearns are Grace Escritt and Brodyn Wray.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a district to recognize students who have attained proficiency in English as well as at least one other language by high school graduation.  Students earned the award by scoring Intermediate-Mid or higher on a four-part assessment demonstrating skills in Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Interpretive Reading, Interpretive Listening, and Presentational Writing.

Being able to know and use more than one language is a critical skill for the 21st century, helping students understand the value of diversity and cultural identity.  Proficiency in a second language also gives students an edge in the labor market and global society.  East Mills Community School District offers Spanish, but proficiency in other languages can be assessed as well.
