East Mills Carpentry

The Carpentry program at East Mills is giving students a powerful, hands-on learning experience that connects classroom skills with real-world work. Each day, 22 students spend dedicated time building, problem-solving, and collaborating on projects that make a visible impact on our campus.

This year’s focus has been on improving and updating district facilities, including a major renovation project near the softball field. Students have been involved in everything from planning and design to construction, gaining practical experience while creating a space that will serve families and community members for years to come.

A key part of the program’s success is the strong partnership between East Mills and local businesses. Professionals from Urban Developments, Haleys Electric LLC, and Rex’s Plumbing and Heating LLC have stepped in to guide students, share their expertise, and provide access to tools and skills used in the trades every day. These partnerships not only deepen student learning but also help them see the range of high-demand career opportunities available right here in southwest Iowa.

"It has been remarkable to watch students’ growth this year. They are gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in the trades—work that goes far beyond textbooks. Problem-solving, teamwork, and authentic learning have kept students engaged as they see their project take shape. Our goal is to complete a project that both the school and the community can be proud of, and we look forward to seeing how this program continues to grow," said Carpentry Teacher, Paul Croghan.

Students are developing more than technical skills; they’re building confidence, responsibility, and pride in the work they do for their school and community. With the support of the district and our local partners, East Mills’ Carpentry program continues to create opportunities for meaningful learning and lasting impact.
