Teachers Collaborate for Professional Development
On January 15th, East Mills and Essex teachers spent professional development together in Essex. Throughout the school year, teachers have been focusing at least half of their professional development time on studying the gradual release of responsibility model. The morning of the 15th was spent learning about Connections Matter, presented to staff by AEA staff members Jasmine Zeitner, Carrie Champine, and Samantha Wilson. The afternoon was led by model teachers. The East Mills model teachers are Mr. Wortman, Mr. Karwal, and Mr. Nesbitt. Mr. Karwal and Mr. Wortman led an interactive egg drop lesson which had teachers working together in groups, creating a container to save an egg from a 12 foot drop. Mr. Nesbitt partnered up with S.S. teacher, Mr. Schuster from Essex and did a guided practice lesson over World War II, which involved actual photographs from Mr. Nesbitt's father during World War II. Another group of Essex model teachers and Mrs. Moyers did examples of vocabulary lessons and strategies. Working together with Essex has expanded the collaboration among teachers.
